When to seek advice
- Pain that limits activity, sleep, work or study.
- Very heavy or prolonged periods, or periods associated with anaemia.
- Bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause.
- No periods or persistent changes in the cycle.
Possible assessment
Depending on the case, this may include examination, ultrasound, pregnancy test, full blood count, hormonal assessment or other targeted tests.
Urgent situations
Very heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting, sudden severe pain, or pregnancy with pain and bleeding require urgent assessment.
Outside opening hours, the answering system offers an urgent-call option and redirects the call to 24-hour telephone assistance.
If there is an immediate threat to life, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe bleeding or rapid deterioration, call 112.
